GROSSE ILE, Mich. (WXYZ) - A 56-year-old man is in critical condition following trench collapse in Grosse Ile.
The man was helping to repair a broken water main when he was buried under at least one to two feet of clay and mud for almost 14 minutes.
It happened along Meridian Road in Grosse Ile around 10:30 Thursday morning.
According to authorities the DPS worker was with another man at the bottom of the 9-foot trench when the sides started caving in.
Rescuers had to dig the man out by hand because heavy machinery could have injured the trapped worker.
Paramedics say the man did not have a pulse when they pulled him out of the trench, but they were able to revive him. Life Flight was called in and the worker was brought to Henry Ford Medical Center in Detroit where he is listed in critical condition.
Police say they are investigating and that MIOSHA is also on scene to make sure proper safety protocols were followed.
