Suspect arrested in murder of Harper Woods, General Motors retiree

HARPER WOODS, Mich (WXYZ) - Police says a suspect is now in custody in connection to the murder of a retired GM worker.

60-year-old Johnny Lee Buckner was found dead in his home along Old Homestead in Harper Woods on February 13.

Buckner had been shot multiple times.  His grandson, who was also living in the home, found his body that evening.

Friends told 7 Action News they are relieved someone is in custody for the terrible crime.

"It's a wonderful thing, he was a very nice person," said Stephanie Armstrong.

According to Armstrong, Buckner suddenly became a widower last year. It was hard for her to hear of Buckner's death too.

"They were nice people," said Armstrong.

Police would not talk on camera to 7 Action News Wednesday evening.  At this time, they do not believe this was a random act of violence.

Buckner's neighborhood remained quiet this evening.  Friends who stopped by the home said there is a lot they will miss about Buckner.

"His smile…his open door policy to me and my daughter," said Armstrong.

Investigators think the suspect acted alone. They are not naming the person right now.

The suspect will be arraigned Thrusday.

Visitation for Buckner will take place Thursday in Detroit and he will be laid to rest on Friday.
