Suspects in court in murders of two Hamtramck women

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Five defendants sat quietly in the courtroom in 31st district court in Hamtramck for day one of their preliminary hearing.

Twenty-six-year-old Brandon Cain, 24-year-old Miguel Rodriguez, 25-year-old of Brian Lee, and cousins 24-year-old Reginald Brown, 19-year-old Jeremy Brown are all charged with abduction, torture, and murder.

They are accused of killing Ashley Conaway and Abreeya Brown of Hamtramck. Abreeya Brown is not related to the Brown cousins.

The best friends went missing in late February. A month later, their bodies were found in a shallow grave in Detroit.

The victims were supposed testify against Cain and Lee in a separate incident that happened in early February.  According to police, Ashley Conaway was attempting to break up with Cain when Cain ordered Lee to shoot her.

A bullet grazed Conaway.

Tuesday afternoon, one witness said she was also in a relationship with Cain at the time, describing it as "friends with benefits."

She told the court Cain wanted her to be his girlfriend but said she did not want to be with him because he was already in a relationship with Ashley Conaway.

The witness testified that Cain told her, "You don't have to worry about that anymore."

Another witness told the court she saw Reginald Brown covered in mud the day of the murder.  She testified she overheard Reginald Brown talking to Jeremy Brown.

"He said clean the gun and get rid of the bullets," said the witness.

The suspects will be back in court Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
