PONTIAC(WXYZ) - A registered sex offender is behind bars after being accused of trying to kidnap a 15-year-old girl in Pontiac.
Keith Dion Wheat is charged with Attempted Kidnapping, a five-year felony and Accosting a Child for Immoral Purposes, a four-year felony.
Oakland County Sheriff's deputies arrested him on Wednesday, June 11.
The victim told deputies that she was approached by a black man who asked for her phone number, then said he wanted to have sex with her.
The teenager ran away from him after he got out of the van and tried to grab her. Police say she flagged down a driver who allowed her to use her cell phone to call 911.
The teen gave police a description of the van and Oakland County Sheriff's deputies were able to track it down and arrest Wheat.
The teen's mom told 7 Action News "I've always told my kids .. as far as anything like that .. run or scream for help. I'm proud of her that she did that."
Wheat is locked up on a $250,000 bond. He's expected back in court on June 19th.
The other man in the vehicle, 42, was released after questioning.
The teen's mom says she hopes to find the woman who stopped to help her daughter so she can say thank you.
