Residents fed up with people dumping everything from mattresses to boats in their neighborhood

DETROIT (WXYZ) - "It's sad to come out and have to walk through this and look at it everyday," says Betty Richardson who lives near Capitol Street and the Southfield Freeway where illegal dumpers have left so many eyesores, including mattresses and three boats. "Every morning, I get up and look to see what is new out here. That's just how it is."

The city garbage trucks that pickup and clean up after dumpers only come around every three months. The next time crews will come by is September 13. And supervisors for Detroit's Department of Public Works (DPW) say that's when they'll haul away the boats.

One DPW worker who did not want to be identified said the problem lies with people who are just lazy and contractors who don't want to pay to properly dispose of construction items.

In the video above, one woman talks about catching dumpers in the act. And see what Detroiter Eric Thomas tells 7 Action News about his old trash dumping habit that he's trying to break.

Listed below are bulk drop-off sites that are free to Detroit residents only (no commercial vehicles or contractors).

Valid identification is required and there is a 1,000 pound weight limit.

The sites do not accept the following items: Remodeling/construction debris, demolition debris, building materials, chemicals, car or truck parts, and fuel tanks.
