West Bloomfield man in serious condition after officer opened fire during routine traffic stop

RIVER ROUGE, Mich (WXYZ) - A West Bloomfield man is in serious condition after an officer opened fire on him during a routine traffic stop in River Rouge.

River Rouge Police say they pulled over the 49-year-old man around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday for erratic driving. Additional officers were called in from Ecourse and River Rouge.

Authorities say the driver stepped out of the vehicle near Jefferson Ave. and Cora St. holding a gun.

That's when a River Rouge officer opened fire on the driver, shooting him several times. The driver did not return fire.

Witnesses say they heard the driver screaming, "I'm dying, I'm dying."

The River Rouge Police Chief says the officer feared for his life. It is unclear if the driver directly pointed his gun at the officer.

The officer is now on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, pending an investigation.

It's still unknown why the driver pulled a gun.
