(WXYZ) - A problem with a building full of downtown Royal Oak luxury lofts is finally being fixed after four years of trouble.
The balcony on one of the units of the building at 11 Mile Road and Main Street had started sloping in 2009. At that time wood beams were added for support.
The building sits in the heart of Royal Oak's busy downtown, where there is a steady stream of people walking and biking by. Some were concerned about the safety of the building.
The condo association had been in a long legal battle with the former contractor and architect. According to Royal Oak's deputy building official, a new contractor secured permits to work on the lofts after the condo association fired the old contractor. We are told the new contractor secured work permits on September 30 to start repair work on the building.
Workers on site tell 7 Action News that water damage caused the balcony to slope.
A spokesperson from the condo association tells 7 Action News that the recently boarded up side of the building is due to structural work being done in two of the units. The work on the two units is expected to be complete within two to three months.
No word yet on when work will be complete on the rest of the building, but crews have built scaffolding around the collapsing balcony so pedestrians would not worry about safety.
