School bus stolen, driver tries to cross border

(WXYZ) - A bus was supposed to pick up kids and take them to school in Detroit, but instead it was taken on a wild ride.

Police say surveillance video caught someone stealing the bus around 5:30 a.m.

It had been parked at the Safeway Transportation Company's lot in Detroit. The bus had been started so it could be warmed up, the driver stepped into the Safeway office and returned to find it missing.

Surveillance shows the suspect driving away. Police say he went to the Ambassador Bridge and tried to cross the border, but he didn't have the fare.

He was turned around and while he's driving along I-75, police say, he sideswiped a car and never stopped.

Eventually, the bus stopped at an apartment complex in Warren. Safeway Transportation was then able to remotely shut off the engine and track its location--all because of the GPS system.
