ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Most kids were up and at 'em pretty early this morning for the first day of school. But there's at least one local school with a dream scenario for night owl students.
These are the lucky kids at the Nexus Academy of Royal Oak, who's giving students the option to attend afternoon classes that start at 12:30PM.
"I was realizing that my sleep schedule was so terrible," said senior Lauren Sheibals, "And I was going home and crashing every day, and I didn't like it. I think it's a little harder for teens to fall asleep at night, personally from my perspective."
A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics is now recommending schools start at least 30 minutes to an hour later, all for students to get plenty of rest. So why don’t students just go to bed earlier? The study goes on to say today’s teens have trouble sleeping before 11 PM, and they're best suited to wake up after 8 AM.
The school day at Nexus still ends around 4:30, but the rest of their lessons continue online, outside of school, at their own pace. As far as brick and mortar learning goes, the late start is all about kids catching a few more Z’s in hopes of earning those A's.
