CUPERTINO, Calif. (WXYZ) - Apple has announced a new, renamed iPad at its San Francisco event. The new iPad will be known as the iPad Air.
That announcement came after the company also revealed new information about it's operating system and laptop and desktop computers.
Apple started off the event by reintroducing Mavericks, the company's new operating system. Apple revealed that it was released today and will be available for free to anyone upgrading from the Snow Leopard or later operating system.
Apple also announced release dates for its upgraded Mac Book Pro line of laptops, saying they would be shipping today.
That news was followed by new information on the upgraded Mac Pro. Apple is calling the computer "The Future of the Pro Desktop."
Apple says the Mac Pro will start at $2999 and will be available in December.
From there, Apple moved on to their iLife Apps suite, introducing new versions of iPhoto, iMovie and Garage Band.
For iPhoto, the company is adding their Photobook feature to iPhoto for the iPad. The company has also revamped iMovie, making it easier to use and adding more features to both the iOS and Mac versions. Garage Band is also getting a new look and a new feature called Drummer. All will be free with the purchase of a new Mac or iOS device.
In addition the iWork suite of Pages, Keynote and Numbers have also been redesigned and reworked to work across the iCloud. They are also free with the purchase of a new Mac or iOS device and available today.
Apple says, in all more than 20 of their apps will be updated today.
Then Apple moved on to the main event, the announcement of upgraded iPad. Before unveiling the new device, Apple said they sold 170 million iPads since it was first introduced 3 1/2 years ago.
Apple says the tablet is thinner, lighter and faster than ever before. They are also renaming the device the iPad Air. The device weighs just 1 pound and Apple says it is the lightest full sized tablet in the world.
The iPad Air will run the same A7 chip that is run in the iPhone 5s. It will come in silver and white and space gray and black. It will run at the same price points that currently run for the iPad. It will ship November 1.
The company also announced it will be keeping the iPad 2.
The iPad mini is also being upgraded with the Retina display and the A-7 chip. It will be available later in November. The original iPad mini will also be kept in the company's product lineup.
