(WXYZ) - Call it the robocopter.
The Office of Naval Research has just announced that they've successfully demonstrated an autonomous helicopter for future use by military units.
The robocopter can detect obstacles and weather conditions using laser sensors while developing its own flight path.
So, if a Marine unit is need of ammunition or other supplies, but the drop would be too risky for a manned aircraft, they would have the ability to just send in the robocopter.
The request for supplies can be made simply by using a tablet.
Researchers say that as the technology develops, they hope it could be used to aid first responders in disaster situations and even help evacuate casualties.
