Smart bus driver attacked with a box cutter, Chesterfield Twp. Police looking for suspect

CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WXYZ) - Chesterfield Township Police are looking for a suspect who attacked a Smart bus driver with a box cutter.

It happened at a bus stop on Gratiot near 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield Township. The driver was dropping off a rider near Wendy’s when a man got on the bus demanding the driver take him to a location which is not on his route.

The next few minutes were terrifying for the driver who told the man he could not take him where he wanted to go.

The driver’s attacker, who said he also had no money, started yelling.

When he was asked to leave, the man pulled out a box cutter and began slashing at the driver. He sliced the driver’s jacket, cut his cheek as the victim held his arms out to protect himself.
To scare the man off, the driver held a cell phone to his ear and faked a call to 911. Once his attacker was gone, the victim was able to call for help.

The bus driver is recovering at home tonight and police are looking for a black male in his mid 30s with a thick mustache. He has pockmarks on both of his cheeks and is stocky with a medium build.

In the meantime, as officers step up patrols, bus drivers will be on guard.
Chesterfield Township Police are actively searching for the suspect who has not been arrested.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Chesterfield Township Police at (586) 949-2322 or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP.
