SMART bus system wants tax hike

(WXYZ) - The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation wants a property tax increase from 0.59 mills to a full 1 mill.

They say tat would cover replacing buses and operating budgets.

SMART’s general manager has been making the rounds to county officials to get them on board with the tax hike.

According to the Detroit Free Press , SMART’s general manager told Macomb County commissioners that without an increase smart could not operate past 2015.

The transit authority wants the millage to go on the August ballot.  Voters in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties would need to approve it.

When we talked with people who ride the buses, most were in favor of the increase, but majority of non-riders said no.
