Smart drinkware detects date rape drugs

(WXYZ) - Date rape drugs-they're odorless, colorless, tasteless and a serious concern for people in social settings.

But one company is on a quest to stop the use of date rape drugs altogether with the help of smart drinkware.

The company is called DrinkSavvy and the founder has patented technology that has the ability to monitor your beverage and instantly warn you if a drug discretely gets slipped into your drink.

DrinkSavvy's color-changing products let people know if their beverage is tainted with GHB or any of the other commonly used date rape drugs.

The company successfully raised enough money last year on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo to help them perfect their prototype.

The founder of DrinkSavvy, Mike Abramson, says in a video on their website that he wanted to create the products after he and several of his close friends were drugged unwillingly.

He says he wanted to prevent it from happening to anyone else.

The company has several products that they are working on: A disposable party cup, a glass and straw.

DrinkSavvy is hoping to have the cups and straws available to the public by the middle of next year.

Early backers of the products are expected to be able to test out the drinkware next month.
