WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) - The latest synthetic drug to become popular among teenagers is something parents need to know about because kids are dying from it.
The drug is called 2C-1 or ‘Smile' but the psychedelic drug is no laughing matter and causes severe hallucinations.
The drug can be purchased in powder or tablet form.
Dr. Sanford Vieder said it used to be popular in the 70's, but has made a resurgence now that K-2 has been pulled from the shelves. The hallucinogenic effect is completely different from one person to the next.
"They may actually do something like being on a roof and think that it's just one step down and walking off of that roof because they've got no connection to reality," said Dr. Vieder, Medical Director with Lakes Urgent Care.
At least two teens in North Dakota have died from it.
Side effects include extremely high blood pressure, bleeding into the brain, and kidney failure. The hallucinogenic effect is completely different from one person to the next.
Right now teens cannot find the drug in stores they have to turn to the streets. But it's becoming more and more popular here in the Midwest.
