Smokers are no longer welcome to apply for jobs at two local hospitals.
Starting January first, Beaumont and Henry Ford will not hire applicants who use tobacco products.
Potential employees will be tested for nicotine use.
The screening only applies to new hires, but current employees are not allowed to smoke or smell of tobacco products during their workday.
"As health care providers, we have a responsibility to take a leadership role in promoting healthy behaviors – starting with ourselves," says Beaumont's president and CEO Gene Michalski.
The hospitals say the no-nicotine hiring policy reinforces their commitment to good health and wellness.
