Standoff with gunman outside of Madison Heights school

(WXYZ) - Police had to act fast after a gunman was spotted roaming the property of Madison Preparatory School in Madison Heights.

He was reportedly seen carrying a shotgun when he was spotted on the property Thursday afternoon. A woman nearby made a frantic call to 911 before police arrived, guns drawn.

The school immediately went on lockdown.

Police say when they arrived at the scene, they had to take cover because the gunman pointed his weapon at them and then at himself.

They were able to arrest the gunman before anyone was hurt.

According to the Madison Heights School District Superintendent Randy Speck, the 24-year-old gunman is related to a school staff member.

Police say the gunman may have a history of mental illness.

The school sent a letter home to parents letting them know there was a "threatening situation" outside of the school.

The suspect could face a judge as early as Saturday.
