Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr pursuing lease of Belle Isle to state

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's state-appointed emergency manager says he'll pursue leasing the Belle Isle river park to Michigan as part of his effort to reverse the city's financial crisis.

Kevyn Orr made the comment Monday night at a public meeting to discuss his plans for staving off bankruptcy and reducing $15 billion in unfunded municipal obligations.

Mayor Dave Bing and Gov. Rick Snyder worked out plans to lease the 985-acre park in the Detroit River to Michigan for operation as a state park.

But the City Council failed to approve the deal earlier this year, and Snyder withdrew the offer.

Orr has the power to override Detroit's elected leaders.
