Government Shutdown closes Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

(AP) - People stopping at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore's visitor center are finding a locked door and a sign informing them the park is closed because of the partial government shutdown.

Rangers fanned out Tuesday morning across the park in northwestern lower Michigan, giving the bad news to campers, hikers and motorists. Gates and barriers are being placed at popular spots such as the dune climb and Pierce Stocking Drive.

About 60 employees have been furloughed from the Empire-based park.

The situation is similar at federal installations across Michigan, including other national parks and forests. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids is closed, although a special artwork display remains open.

National Guard operations are being curtailed. About 900 military technicians could be furloughed, and training events are off.
