Sterling Heights meat store recalls 500 pounds of ground beef due to possible salmonella

(WXYZ) - Jouni Meats of Sterling Heights is recalling nearly 500 pounds of ground beef because of possible salmonella contamination.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says the product were produced between Dec. 4, 2012, and Dec. 9, 2012.

The ground beef was distributed directly to consumers at Jouni Meats and an unnamed Macomb County restaurant.

Seven illnesses are being linked to the outbreak in Michigan and Arizona.

FSIS and the company are concerned that some of the beef may be frozen and in consumers' freezers.

Symptoms of salmonella diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.

It's recommended raw meat products are cooked to a temperature of 160° F.
