Steve Utash returns to work, woman who helped save him from mob beating talks about their friendship

(WXYZ) - Four months after being beaten by a mob of people on Detroit's east side, Steve Utash is back at work as a tree trimmer.

He was attacked last April after he accidentally hit a boy with his pick-up truck who darted out into the street.

For the first time, we're hearing from Utash in a letter to the public posted on his gofundme page.

In it, he gives a special thank you to Deborah Hughes, the retired nurse who helped save his life.

She rushed to help him when she saw Utash getting attacked.

She says it's great to see the special thank you from Utash.

"It makes me feel good," she says.

Hughes says Utash first called her last month.

"When I got the first call .. I didn't know what to think. He was like .. this is Steven Utash.. and I was like Oh my gosh! You sound great! He was like, Deborah, I love you. Thank you for everything," she recalled.

Hughes says she and Utash have been talking every week to ten days lately. She says she considers him part of her family and they plan on meeting for the first time very soon.

"I want to give him a great big hug him one time! He always be a part of my family ... Always. I love him," she says.
