DETROIT (WXYZ) - A DDOT bus carrying dozens of people was hijacked and, for some reason, Detroit Police let the suspected hijacker go with just a ticket.
DDOT bus driver Schetrone Collier says threats against their lives is an everyday thing, but this time it wasn't just the Detroit city bus driver who was threatened, it was every passenger, too.
It happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on Gratiot, when a 29-year-old man decided to hijack a bus full of about 40 people. Witnesses say as soon as he got on the bus he told the driver he was armed with a 40-caliber gun and threatened to shoot every passenger if the bus driver didn't just drive. The man also claimed to have killed before.
It's unclear how far he traveled on the bus, but the driver was able to keep cool and somehow call for help. And when the man finally got off the bus, police were able to locate him quickly and arrest him.
Officers say they never found a gun on him and, thankfully, no one was hurt. But Schetrone Collier, who has been driving for DDOT for 20 years, says he was not surprised by the incident, and that DDOT needs it's own police force.
Now here's the part you may find hard to believe: For some reason, Detroit Police let the suspected hijacker go with just a ticket for interference.
There are questions surrounding the release of the man who threatened so many people. Police officials say they know who he is and that they'll be seeking felony charges against him.
