Communities Honor America's Veterans

(WXYZ) - There are a number of special events going on all day in our area to honor America's veterans.

A number of communities are also holding special programs to honor veterans. One ceremony was held at the Elmwood Cemetery at 10:00 A.M. The ceremony honored the 102nd Regiment, a division of African American soldiers that served during the civil war. Eighteen members of the unit are buried at Elmwood.

Clinton Township's Resurrection Cemetery is also holding a ceremony. The 1:00 P.M. event will include the unveiling of memorial tablets that bear the names of deceased veterans.

Another ceremony is being held at 11:00 A.M. at Concordia University in Ann Arbor. During the ceremony, veterans will be given $5,000 scholarships in their names. Governor Jennifer Granholm is schedule to attend.

Also at 11:00 A.M. Veterans are invited to attend a ceremony at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. The cemetery is one of the two national shrines in Michigan.

Sterling Heights is holding a Veterans Day ceremony at the parks and recreation center at 11:00 A.M. Royal Oak is also holding an 11:00 A.M. ceremony at the war memorial, which is located between the city hall and the public library. The event kicks off with a march that begins at VFW Post 1669.

Birmingham and the Daughters of the American Revolution Piety Chapter are also holding an 11:00 A.M. ceremony at the Civil War and World War II monuments in Shain Park.

At noon, Detroit's Chinese community is commemorating a plaque to honor Chinese-American veterans. The ceremony is taking place at the Chinese American's Chinese Community Center in Madison Heights.

Sacred Heart Church is Roseville is holding a 1:30 P.M. memorial mass to remember our veterans. The church is at 18430 Utica Road.

Senator Debbie Stabenow is also in town for a luncheon to honor America's veterans. The 10:30 A.M. luncheon also honors Michigan's Military Moms. It's hosted by WOMC-FM at Andiamo in Warren.

Canton Township is holding a "Salute to Service" ceremony at the Village Theater at 6:00 P.M. As part of the ceremony, the Michigan Military Moms will be collecting items to send to service men and women currently overseas.

The Detroit Rescue Mission is holding a Veterans' Day dinner at 6:00 P.M.

And in observance of Veterans Day, all Secretary of State Offices are closed.
