DETROIT (AP) -- A fifth to one-quarter of Detroit's 572,502 registered voters are expected to cast ballots in the city's general election.
Elections Director Daniel Baxter said at a press conference Monday the estimated turnout partly is based on 35,000 returned absentee ballots. He says 46,000 were issued.
Tuesday's ballot includes races for mayor, city council, city clerk, school board and charter commission. Proposals include electing city council by districts and a schools' bond initiative.
It is Detroit's fourth election since a special mayoral primary in February. A runoff for mayor was in May, followed by the August nonpartisan primary.
Turnout has been poor. About 17 percent of registered voters cast ballots in August. Only 14.5 percent voted in February for mayor.
