Driver Tasered, Dies after Reckless Rampage

Last Update: 11/20/2009 6:53 pm
BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - Bloomfield Township police are trying to determine what kicked off a reckless rampage that ended in the death of the suspect.

It began late Thursday afternoon with reports of a white van driving erratically near Square Lake and Woodward. Witnesses told police the van slammed into a number of other vehicles and construction barrels.

One witness told police he was assaulted by the driver when he approached the van after it had stopped at a gas station. He took off again a short time later.

Officers eventually caught up with the van, but police say that's when the driver began ramming their patrol cars. They chased the suspect down Woodward to Big Beaver, where he turned east and headed into Troy. The chase continued with the help of Troy Police.

As the van approached Adams Road, police say he slammed into another vehicle, bringing the chase to a halt. The people inside the second car weren't hurt.

Officers say once his van came to a stop, the suspect jumped out and began attacking them. The officers tried to taser the suspect, but they say the stun guns barely affected him.

Officers were eventually able to handcuff the suspect, however, he quickly became unresponsive. Officers tried to assist him at the scene, but he was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.

Two Bloomfield Township Police officers were injured in the incident. They are expected to be okay.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
