WASHINGTON, D.C. (WXYZ) - UAW President Ron Gettelfinger received praise from Democratic Senators for his leadership, but was questioned by some Republicans for his positions on wage and healthcare issues.
WATCH DEBATE IN VIDEO PLAYER ON THE RIGHTSpecifically, Republican Senator Bob Corker asked Gettelfinger why he had not acted sooner in allowing GM to delay payments to the union's healthcare fund (VEBA).
Gettelfinger made it clear that any decision on healthcare, or on the highly criticized Jobs Bank, would only be made after experts analyzed the programs.
Just yesterday the union agreed to re-open contract talks and make changes to the Jobs Bank, alterations that could elimate the controversial program that forces the Big Three to pay almost full wages to laid off blue collar workers.
