LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan's governor wants you to give your mailbox a good shake.
Jennifer Granholm has proclaimed Saturday "Shake Your Mailbox Day" in Michigan. She's encouraging people with roadside mailboxes to give them a good shake to help prepare for winter snowplowing.
The proclamation says heavy snow thrown by plows has caused an increasing amount of mailbox damage in recent years. Granholm says giving them a shake will help determine if maintenance is needed.
If the mailbox moves when shaken, it's an indication that it might not stand up to snow thrown by a plow. Screws may need to be tightened, or the mailbox or post might need to be replaced altogether.
