(WXYZ) - It took just one strike of lightning to destroy a historic mansion in Lathrup Village Friday morning.
The mansion on Morningside Plaza erupted into flames after it was hit by the lightning bolt. Family members who were inside the home, were able to get out safely.

It is owned by the family of Louise Lathrup, the woman the city was named after. The home had been passed down to family members.
One of the residents said when the lightning hit, bricks flew everywhere, the roof caved in and the windows shattered.
Action News spoke with Louise Lathrup Kelly-Driscoll who is part of the Lathrup family and lived in the home. She says it's a tough loss, but says she will get through this.
The Lathrup family is credited with starting Lathrup Village. The mansion once was home to the city's Post Office and other community services.
Firefighters were able to save some historic pictures that have been collected over the decades, but the home is a total loss.
