Seniors Not Forgotten on Thanksgiving

Last Update: 11/27/2009 9:31 am
DETROIT (WXYZ) - Thousands of metro Detroit seniors are feasting on all the Thanksgiving favorites thanks to people donating time, money and their culinary expertise through Meals on Wheels.

Jim Forrer is no stranger to hard work.

"I actually work eight days a week if you could figure that one out," says Forrer, an advertising media consultant by trade. Forrer most enjoys the countless hours he devotes in the kitchen at Emerald Food Services, although he does so for free.

"This is really my love, this is better than a round of golf," Forrer says. "The inspiration these people give to me is better than a day at the beach.''

Others like Jim donate time and energy to prepare meals for the thousands of recipients of the Meals on Wheels program, which covers 16 different cities throughout southeast Michigan and southeast Oakland County, totaling about 1,000 meals a day.

Not only does Jim Forrer prepare the meals, he also delivers them.

"To see a senior smile at you and to know this is possibly the only food they'll get all day is just something you can't explain.," he says.

For the very first time, the Area Agency on Aging 1B is selling greeting cards to cover the cost of the holiday meals.

The cards include a colored-pencil drawing of a winter landscape by Bloomfield Hills artist Lillian Mitchell.

“I have been selling as many as I can to benefit the program,” says Mitchell.

The cards are $12 for a pack of 10. An additional $7 shipping fee will be added to orders delivered by mail.

You can purchase the cards directly through the Area Agency on Aging 1-B by calling 1 (800) 852-7795.
