UPDATE: Cop Shot, Suspect Killed in Robbery

Last Update: 10/30/2009 12:50 pm

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - What started as a robbery at a cell phone store in Plymouth Township Thursday night ended with the suspect dead and a police officer wounded as the shooter tried to make his escape.

Multiple bullets tore the wall of the Wireless USA store in Plymouth Township, from the shots police say killed a man trying to score some fast cash.

"He did rob them and take money," said Detective Lt. Monica Yesh of the Michigan State Police. "As the robbery suspect came out of the store, shots were exchanged. The suspect was fatally wounded and one of the officers was also shot."

State Police officials are saying very little about the officer, but sources reveal he is an 18-year veteran of the Plymouth Township Police Department, and that he was wounded in the arm and hand.

Investigators say the robber pulled a handgun in the store, and got money from what seemed to be an easy target.

But when he got out to the parking lot, police were waiting.

The wounded officer is said to be undergoing surgery. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
