Student collapses and dies after walking to high school in Detroit

(WXYZ) - The parents of 17-year-old Toron Murphy Jr. say he was strong, healthy, helpful around the house and loved football. But moments after getting dropped off at school Tuesday morning, Toron collapsed.

Toron was able to tell others around him to call his mom. He was then rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital where the high school football player who had dreams of one day playing in the NFL was pronounced dead.

Toron's father told 7 Action News, "He hadn't been sick so it's odd".

Outside the family's home on Detroit's east side, Toron's older brother Dorian Blair held the poster they took to Ford Field in October when they cheered on Toron and his fellow Crusaders in the Detroit Public School League Championship.

A spokesperson for Detroit Public Schools said that a team of counselors were at the school this morning to help the students at faculty.

"Our thoughts go out to the student's family, as well as the King High School community," DPS said in a statement.

On Wednesday, an autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine what caused Toron's death.
