Students win scholarship money from Ford Freedom Essay Contest

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Around 1,800 students piled into Detroit's Music Hall Wednesday for the Ford Freedom Award Essay contest.

The day included lectures and other scholarly activities, but the big excitement for the students took place when Christopher and Kyle Massey took the stage.

The brothers, from Nickelodeon and Disney Channel, hosted a Family-Feud style game for the students.

The real competition was actually between the 11 finalists for their pieces of writing. Every year the contest features a theme that the students write about. This year's topic was perseverance. The top essay writer received $5,000 in scholarship money.

The Ford Freedom Awards will take place Wednesday evening with 7 Action News Editorial Director, Chuck Stokes, serving as one of the presenters.
