(WXYZ) - Authorities are asking for the public's help to find a suspect accused of robbing multiple families' homes while they were attending funerals.
The Michigan State Police says the suspect appears to be targeting homes of people who recently lost loved ones that were listed in an obituary.
The home invasions have occurred over the last month in multiple counties including Washtenaw, Livingston, Monroe and Oakland.
Police have obtained surveillance photos of the wanted suspect. He also appears to be driving a silver, four-door vehicle, believed to be a Pontiac Grand Prix.
The suspect is described as a black male, around 20-30 years old with facial hair.
If anyone can identify the suspect, please contact the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office at 734-973-7711 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
We spoke with a funeral director in Royal Oak to get some tips on how you can protect yourself and your family and not become a victim.
“One thing, it might be best not to put the city that the loved one lived in,” said Christopher Korkoian of Edward Korkoian Funeral Home in Royal Oak. He said to also omit your loved one’s age.
“If the person has a husband or wife who is still living, maybe you don’t put the age of the person who has passed away,”
The most important thing you can do is to have someone at your house during the funeral.
“Probably having a family member or a neighbor keep an eye on the home or be in the home during that time,” said Korkoian.
