The Homestead Property Tax Credit you have come to count on might not be there this year

REDFORD, MICH (WXYZ) - Nearly half a million Michigan homeowners received postcards this week telling them about changes in the Homestead Property Tax Credit, a credit they might not be getting this year.

There are changes in the law designed to help reduce Michigan's budget deficit.

It will affect mostly seniors 65 and older, people whose household resource is more than $50,000 and those whose taxable property is over $135,000

Some homeowners are upset, saying it was something they have counted on.

The Michigan treasurer's office says it sent the postcards so people would be aware of the changes as they start to gather information to prepare their tax returns due in April of 2013.

"I think this is something that should have been on the ballot," says George Duffourc of Redford. He says it is going to impact a lot of people and they won't be happy about it.
