Tigers trade for infielder Jose Iglesias

(WXYZ) - The Tigers made another splash at the trade deadline, acquiring infielder Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox as part of a three-team trade with Boston and Chicago.

Announced officially just before midnight, the trade sends Avisail Garcia to the Chicago White Sox and Brayan Villareal to the Red Sox.

The Red Sox also acquired Jake Peavy, with the White Sox getting a trio of Red Sox prospects, Jeffrey Wendelken, Francelis Montas and Cleulius Rondon.

"We are excited to be adding a quality player to our middle infield," said Tigers President, CEO and General Manager, David Dombrowski. "He is a young player that will provide a lot of depth and has had success playing a variety of roles in the infield."

Iglesias, 23, hit .330 (71x215) with ten doubles, two triples, one home run and 19 RBI in 63 games played in 2013. He has compiled a .979 fielding percentage playing shortstop, third base and second base for the Red Sox. He was named the American League Rookie of the Month for June, 2013 after batting .395 with four doubles, two triples, one home run and six RBI.

Originally signed as an international free agent by the Red Sox in September, 2009, Iglesias made his major league debut with the club in 2011. In parts of three seasons at the major league level, he has batted .280 (81x289) with 12 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 21 RBI in 98 career games.

Iglesias, 5-11, 185 lbs, is a native of Havana, Cuba and resides in Miami, Florida during the offseason.

Garcia hit .241 (20x83) with three doubles, one triple, two home runs and ten RBI in 30 games played with the Tigers in 2013. He batted .382 (55x144) with seven doubles, one triple, five home runs and 23 RBI in 32 games with Triple A Toledo in 2013.

Villarreal went 0-2 with a 20.77 ERA (4.1IP/10ER) and six strikeouts in seven games with the Tigers in 2013. He posted a 2-2 record, 3.15 ERA (34.1IP/12ER) in 28 appearances with Triple A Toledo in 2013.
