UPS package thief charged

(WXYZ) - 7 Action News first brought you the story of a man following UPS trucks over the holiday season and stealing packages off porches. Now, that man has been charged with larceny and theft, and driving with suspended license.

Robert Ray Ohlinger was sentenced to 22 days time served, but is going back to prison for parole violation.

With an anonymous tip in reference to that report, Westland Police were able to arrest Ohlinger who admitted to the theft of a package that was caught on video.

According to police, Ohlinger admitted to stealing more than a dozen packages from homes in Westland, Canton and Livonia.

Westland Police Lieutenant Todd Adams said that police were able to get pictures from the video, and started receiving calls immediately after it aired.

"Twice in two weeks the Westland Police Department has been able to identify wanted persons through the help of the media," Westland Police Chief Jeff Jedrusik said.  "It is nice to see community and law enforcement working together to take criminals off our streets."

Adams believes there could be more victims out there.

"They may not know they are victims," Adams said.  "They just assumed the package didn't show up or they think it got lost."
