Hurricanes, fires and now an earthquake in Mexico. A “perfect storm” of sorts has developed in recent weeks that has aide agencies scrambling to fill the needs around the globe.

While the initial response for monetary donations has blown local agencies away, the reality is that they’re stretched thin.

The Michigan region of the American Red Cross has deployed hundreds of volunteers across the United States to respond to recent disasters, and more will be needed after recent disasters. It’s no secret that groups like the American Red Cross rely on volunteers, a quick search online will show you more than 90-percent of their workforce come from volunteers. In fact, more than 64,000 people responded to disasters last year alone.

However, the recent string of hurricanes affecting Houston, Florida and beyond created what one local Red Cross official called “our biggest call for need in recent memory.” That includes large-scale disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the difference: the latest calls for disaster relief help are spread throughout the country and the globe.

In Detroit on Wednesday night a special volunteer training course was held, more are scheduled in the coming days.

While money is still needed to address ongoing issues, and regular operations, the need for volunteers has never been greater. Right now, the challenge lies in getting volunteers in the door, doing background checks, and training them properly so they can perform necessary duties in the field.

If you’d like to become a volunteer you’re urged to check out information online, and determine whether you’d be a fit. Money and blood donations are also appreciated.
