Volunteers gather to seal abandoned houses on Detroit's west side

DETROIT(WXYZ) - Hundreds of volunteers gathered to seal about 150 abandoned homes on Detroit's west side for the 22nd annual "Make A Difference Day".

It was the second time since August that groups from all over the city came together to board up vacant homes.

The work that was completed Saturday focused on neighborhoods that were west of the Southfield Freeway and are home to three schools.

One volunteer called the task daunting.

The emergency manager for the Detroit Public Schools, Roy Roberts, said a lack of safety is a major barrier to student achievement.

Last year, one hundred homes were sealed up.
