Walmart to offer teachers money back from school supply purchases

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (WXYZ) - Walmart plans to offer 10 percent savings to teachers shopping for school supplies this back-to-school season for the first time ever.

The retailer decided to offer the exclusive savings event after recent data showed 53 percent of teachers received less in funding last year.

When teachers go to Walmart to shop during Teacher Appreciation Week, they will receive an eGift Card for 10 percent of their purchases. There will be over 15,000 eligible items including numerous classroom necessities.

"On average, teachers around the country spend about $1,000 readying their classrooms, and half of that comes from reaching into their own wallets to make sure students have what they need," executive vice president, general merchandise for Walmart U.S. Steve Bratspies said. "We've had a commitment to supporting teachers in the communities we serve for many years.This program is one more way we're helping lessen the cost, increase support and set teachers up for success."

Teacher Appreciation Week takes place July 25 to 31. Teachers must then register their receipt by August 15 online at to qualify. The eGift card will come in the mail 14 days after registering.
