(WXYZ) - Now that a new Wayne County Executive will take over on January 1, experts say fast action is needed to avoid the appointment of an Emergency Manager.
Twelve-year Executive Robert Ficano lost his bid to keep the job in the August primary. ayne County has a $99 million deficit, employee pensions are only 45% funded, no money has been set aside for retiree health care and experts say the county needs to focus on core services like public safety, the sheriff and prosecutor.
A new county jail project also sits abandoned with millions in cost overruns.
The Executive sets budgets for those departments, but those elected officials run them. The state already has a close eye on Wayne County finances that could lead to a review and takeover.
