(WXYZ) - Soy beans have been heralded as the cancer-ending drug. And now, a substance found in soy beans is said to be the solution for youthful, healthy skin.
Women who used genistein in a clinical test are calling it a "facelift in a bottle."
But what exactly is genistein?
It's a plant hormone in soy beans that boosts collagen production.
Collagen is found in the flesh and connective tissues of animals. It helps skin in continual cell renewal, suppleness and firmness.
As people age, collagen loss promotes wrinkles and sagging. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, "Without the structural support of collagen, blood vessels, tendons, and skin become fragile."
Around 2,000 women aged 50 to 65 took part in the clinical test in 2011.
Formulated by Swisscode, a Swiss cosmetic firm, genistein inhibits the action of enzymes that erode the quality and production of collagen and elastin.
53 percent of women in the clinical test said their skin looked younger and felt firmer after just one month of use.
