World No Tobacco Day kicks off May 31, Help offered to quit smoking

(WXYZ) - Looking to quit smoking? This might be the time to do is as the Genesee County Health Department says World No Tobacco Day kicks off on May 31.

The purpose is to create worldwide awareness of the health risk of using tobacco and support policies to reduce tobacco use.

"Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Michigan—killing more than 12,700 Michigan residents each year," according to the Genesee County Health Department.

The health department added, "More than 8 million Americans are living with a smoking-related disease, and every day more than 1,000 youth under age 18 become daily smokers."

The Michigan Department of Community health has a free telephone service to help tobacco users quit.
