WXYZ-TV has a fantastic May, viewership surges

(WXYZ) - 7 Action News is soaring after a fantastic month of May that includes a first place tie for shows at both 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., and a surge for the evening shows.

WXYZ is watched by more viewers than any other station in the Detroit market, and the Nielsen ratings also say 7 Action News is the number one sign-on sign-off in total households.

Also, 7 Action News this morning is now tied for first place at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. in the key demographic of adults, 25-54, seeing a 42% growth at 5 a.m. and a 20% growth at 6 a.m.

For the noon slot, the newscast is up 55% for adults, and we also increased nearly 30% for Action News at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“The growth of Action News in May is a testament to our team. The passion in our newsroom for covering southeastern Michigan, and the commitment to making a difference, is unrivaled,” said Channel 7 News Director Dave Manney. “It’s gratifying to see viewers responding.”

WXYZ had ratings growths in every newscast, and was the only station in Detroit to maintain or grow year-to-year in every weekday newscast among the adults, 25-54 demographic.

“In a market that knows and expects quality journalism, our momentum is a tremendous vote of confidence from viewers,” said WXYZ Station Manager Mike Murri. “Our challenge now is to build on the momentum.”
