GAME RECAP: Tigers take 2 - 0 lead in ALCS by winning both games in New York

(WXYZ) - The Tigers extended their lead in the ALCS with a Game 2 win in New York.

They faced a New York team looking to even things up after almost taking Game 1 in the 9th. However, the Yankees were without their Captain, as Derek Jeter's postseason came to an end Saturday in the 12th inning when he broke his ankle fielding a ball.

The Yankees sent Hiroki Kuroda to the mound for today's game. Kuroda was 16 and 11 for the season, with a 3.32 ERA. He posted a 3.38 ERA in 13.1 innings against the Tigers during the regular season.

The Tigers are also in flux after Saturday's Game 1, as the team has announced that Jose Valverde would not act as closer Sunday. The decision comes after Valverde gave up four runs in the 9th inning last night.

The Tigers stared Anibal Sanchez, who was 9 and 13 with a 3.86 ERA during the regular season. Sanchez was 0 and 1 against the Yankees in a 3 inning regular season outing, during which he posted a 21 ERA.

7:26 p.m. Phil Coke gives up a hit to A Rod, but gets Curtis Granderson to end the inning and send Detroit home to Comerica with a 2 - 0 lead in the ALCS.

7:16 p.m. The Tigers go down swinging in the 9th, but no new runs are scored. On to the bottom of the 9th.

For those keeping score at home, we had one ejection, two runs and five Yankee pitchers in half an inning that lasted about 60 minutes. Yankees come to bat down 3 - 0. Oh ... and Phil Coke is coming in to pitch for the Tigers.

6:55 p.m. Rapada walks Prince Fielder to load the bases and that's it for him. Cody Eppley now on the mound for the Yankees.

6:45 p.m. Miguel Cabrera's bat wakes up for an opposite field single to push the Tigers lead to 3 - 0. That's it for Joba, Clay Rapada now in for the Yankees.

6:40 p.m. Avisail Garcia comes in to pinch hit and sends a base hit into the outfield, and suddenly it's 2 - 0 Tigers in the 8th. Logan gets pulled and then Yankees manager Joe Girardi gets ejected for arguing the bad call at 2nd. Joba Chamberlain is now pitching for the Yankees.

6:38 p.m. Kuroda leaves the game after a bad call by the 2nd base umpire keeps the Tigers alive in the 8th. Boone Logan is in for Yankees. Kuroda allowed 5 hits and 1 earned run. He also got 11 strikeouts.

6:24 p.m. Sanchez gets out of the 7th inning without giving up a run. We're heading to the 8th with the Tigers holding on to a 1 - 0 lead.

6:06 p.m. A Delmon Young single gets the Tigers on the board in the top of the 7th as a throwing error by the Yankees on what should have been an easy double play keeps the inning alive for one more batter. Heading to the bottom of the 7th it's 1 - 0 Tigers

5:49 p.m. Jhonny Peralta comes through again on defense to get the force out at 1st with the Yankees threatening. It's still 0 -0 as we head to the seventh.

5:13 p.m. A-Rod strikes out to end the Yankees half of the 4th. Still no score as we head to the fifth.
