Jim Leyland says Jose Valverde is still the Tiger's closer

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Jim Leyland spoke to the media Friday for the first time since Jose Valverde blew a save on Lorenzo Cain's two-out ninth-inning home run Wednesday.

Leyland told the media that Valverde is still the team's closer, saying that the Tigers have nine blown saves this season and Valverde is only responsible for one-third of those.

Valverde is 9-for-12 in save opportunities this season but has struggled in the last two weeks, giving up five home runs in his last 5 1/3 innings. Despite those numbers, Leyland said he is still the man for the job.

Tiger's general manager Dave Dombrowski instilled his confidence in Valverde as well. Dombrowski told the Holland Sentinel: "Right now Valverde is going through a tough period, and when you're going through a tough period it's never easy. But I think he's in a position where he'll come out and he'll pitch well for us and do a good job."
