Tigers designate Jose Valverde for assignment

Tigers pitcher Jose Valverde has likely thrown his final pitch for Detroit, as the team designated the beleaguered closer for assignment Friday afternoon.

Al Albuquerque has been called up to replace Valverde on the active roster.

Also on Friday, Matt Tuiasosopo was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left intercostal muscle.

Avisail Garcia has been recalled from Toledo to take Tuiasosopo's place on the roster.

Valverde was added to the Tigers roster after the regular season began and showed signs of effectiveness over the course of 19.1 innings pitched, but he allowed six home runs and blew three saves.

The most notable failure was last week in Kansas City, when Valverde surrendered a two-run, game-tying home run to Lorenzo Cain when the Tigers were one strike away from victory.

The final straw for Valverde was Wednesday's outing, when he surrendered four runs and five hits to the Baltimore Orioles in a non-save situation in the ninth inning.
