DETROIT (WXYZ) -- Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy is just like any other Tigers fan, keeping tabs on all the team's trade talks.

But unlike most Tigers fans, Van Gundy also has the front-office perspective.

"I get attached to certain guys, I want 'em to stay," Van Gundy told reporters this week. "But I also know Al (Avila) has a very difficult job, so obviously I understand that side of it."

Van Gundy said that as a fan, he was sorry to see J.D. Martinez traded to the Diamondbacks.

"I loved watching J.D. Martinez, I love watching Verlander, and I've watched Cabrera since his rookie year in Miami when we were there, so as a fan I want all those guys to stay."

Van Gundy added that he is a Tigers season ticket holder, and has followed the team closely all season.

"When I'm not out there (at Comerica Park), my son and I watch most of the games on TV, so I'm pretty well aware of what's going on."
