Detroit Lions and Big 10 to announce new bowl game that will be held at Ford Field

(WXYZ) - The Lions will formally announce tomorrow that the team will host a college bowl game likely featuring teams from the Big Ten and ACC on an annual basis.

A conference call has been scheduled for 11:30 a.m. tomorrow with Lions president Tom Lewand and Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany.

The new bowl game would likely replace the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl, which is currently played at Ford Field.

The Lions are eager to host a bowl game featuring a Big Ten team because ultimately, they would like Ford Field to be considered as a possible host of the Big Ten Championship Game and even the new College Football Playoff Championship.

If the team and city impresses Big Ten officials, the belief is Detroit will be more likely to host one of the more marquee postseason games.

It is unknown how marquee the Lions bowl game will be or when it will be played, but the Big Ten has responded to such questioning by saying each bowl game they are affiliated with will be evaluated on a matchup by matchup basis.

The conference already has commitments with the Pinstripe Bowl in New York, the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, the Orange Bowl in Miami and a new bowl game in the San Francisco area, among others.
