Drummond, Monroe begin Team USA workouts

(WXYZ) - The road to the 2016 Olympic Games has begun for two Pistons.

Detroit big men Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe are in Las Vegas for the USA Basketball minicamp conducted by national team coach Mike Krzyzewski. 27 other players were invited to the camp, which runs from July 22-25.

Drummond, 19, and Monroe, 23, are looking to travel with the national team to Madrid next year to play in the FIBA Basketball World Cup tournament, which would act as a huge stepping stone to playing in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Drummond is coming off a rookie season where he averaged 7.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Monroe averaged 16.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game for the Pistons last season.

Both Pistons players have previous national team experience dating back to high school. Drummond played on the USA Basketball under-16 team that won the world championships in 2009 and the under-17 team that repeated as champions in 2010. Monroe was a member of the USA Basketball Junior National Select Team of 2008.

You can see Monroe and Drummond in the USA Basketball intrasquad game Thursday on NBATV at 9 p.m. from the UNLV campus.
