Bentley placed on season-ending injured reserve

The Lions announced Thursday cornerback Bill Bentley has been placed on the season-ending injured reserve list and will undergo shoulder surgery next week.

Bentley, a third-round pick in this year's draft from Louisiana-Lafayette, has been troubled by the shoulder injury dating back to the team's offseason training activities.

Head coach Jim Schwartz said after practice today the injury has limited Bentley's ability to play as effectively as the coaching staff would like him to and was a contributing factor on some costly pass interference penalties earlier in the season.

Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew said, "Bentley was fighting through the injury with his shoulder.  He felt he could still play, but there was concern on our part and concern on his part about making it worse.  He will require surgery, next week."

The trade for wide receiver Mike Thomas was also made official this afternoon.

"Thomas is an experienced receiver who adds to our veteran depth.  He has a lot of talent and a lot of skill- a very productive guy."
